Tea tree hydrosol

Description and properties: Obtained by steam distillation of the leaves of the small tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia), this floral water has a fresh, spicy scent that can also be described as medicinal. Its name reportedly comes from the legend that tea was brewed from the leaves of this tree for Captain Cook when he discovered Australia. Although the taste of the tea was not particularly pleasant, the name stuck. Aboriginal Australians use tea tree for practically every ailment, much like lavender in the Mediterranean. Tea tree essential oil and hydrosol are powerful immune stimulants and antiseptics. It also has analgesic properties, meaning it reduces pain from wounds. Tea tree water is also mildly antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-infective and antifungal, making it effective for problems with acne,  fungal infections, insect bites and sunburn.

It is suitable for all skin types, especially oily and combination skin. It also soothes issues with eczema, psoriasis, and similar conditions. It can also be used to moisten a cloth for caring for babies' bottoms.

Mouthwash: Similar to peppermint hydrosol, tea tree can also be used in combination with water as a mouthwash (100ml of hydrosol in 500ml of boiled and cooled water in a dark container), as it treats gingivitis (gum inflammation) and prevents bad breath.

Wound care: Use undiluted tea tree hydrosol to rinse superficial wounds, cuts and abrasions.

Acne: Add 20ml of tea tree hydrosol and 5 drops of tea tree essential oil to 80ml of moisturising cream. Gently massage the mixture onto the problem area and leave to work for a minute or so before washing off with warm water. As a toning lotion, you can apply undiluted hydrosol to acne-prone skin with clean cotton wool and let it dry naturally in the air.

Uses for hydrosols: as an addition to baths, to make excellent masks with Argiletz cosmetic clay (green, white, red, pink, yellow), where they are used instead of water or tea, for moisturising the face before applying creams, as a toning mist that revitalises, refreshes and restores facial skin, they can be spritzed on instead of perfume, they can be used instead of room fresheners, for scenting bed linen, for aromatherapy instead of or in combination with essential oils,…

Usage instructions: Shake before use. Facial cleansing: Moisten a piece of cotton wool with the hydrosol and cleanse the facial skin with circular movements, repeat if necessary. Toner/facial mist: Spray onto cleansed facial skin before applying moisturiser. Take care not to get it in your eyes. Repeat several times a day as needed for refreshment. Face mask: Mix with clay and apply to cleansed face. Leave on for 10 – 15 minutes, rinse with water, moisten the skin with hydrosol and apply moisturising cream or vegetable oil. Bath: Pour some hydrosol into a bathtub filled with water and let yourself enjoy its beneficial effects. Hair care: Spray onto freshly washed hair and massage into the scalp. No rinsing required. Storage: Store hydrosols in a dark, cool place, ideally in the refrigerator, as this effectively inhibits the growth of bacteria that might develop over time. After opening, use the hydrosol within six months.
