- Meadowfoam seed oil
Meadowfoam seed oil
Meadowfoam seed oil has a very specific composition, which makes it a unique oil with no suitable
substitute among other oils. Approximately two thirds of the oil consists of eicosenoic acid (C20:1), around 15% is
erucic acid (C22:1), and the remainder is made up of other C20 and C22 fatty acids. Among the 2%
unsaponifiable matter, phytosterols and polyphenols predominate.
Stability and heating: Based on its composition, the oil falls among moderately stable oils with a solid shelf
life. We recommend storing it in a cool, dark place. The oil may be heated and in creams it is added to the oil phase.
Oil properties: Meadowfoam seed oil leaves a light feeling on the skin, as it absorbs quickly. It is a less greasy oil
that leaves a minimal film on the skin. It reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL), softens the skin, and has
anti-inflammatory properties. It is also widely used in hair care products, especially to increase shine.
Use in: The oil is suitable for use in creams, lotions, serums, and other cosmetic products for
skin and hair care
Recipe for an emulsion (cream) with meadowfoam seed oil and hydrosol
Ingredients:
30 ml meadowfoam seed oil (Limnanthes alba)
20 ml hydrosol (e.g., lavender hydrosol, chamomile hydrosol, rose, etc.)
2-3 g emulsifier (e.g., OliveM 1000 or Montanov 68)
5 drops essential oil (e.g., lavender, rosemary, chamomile)
5 drops vitamin E (antioxidant and natural preservative)
Procedure:
Preparing the water and oil phases:
In one container, mix 30 ml of meadowfoam seed oil with the emulsifier. In another container, mix 20 ml of the chosen hydrosol.
Heating:
Heat both phases to approximately 70°C in a water bath. Make sure the emulsifier dissolves completely in the oil phase.
Combining the phases:
When both phases are ready and heated to the same temperature (approximately 70°C), slowly pour the water phase (hydrosol) into the oil phase while stirring carefully. Stir until you obtain a uniform and creamy consistency (this may take a few minutes).
Adding essential oils and vitamin E:
Once the emulsion cools to room temperature (approximately 30-40°C), add the essential oil and vitamin E and mix well.
Storage:
Transfer the cream into a clean bottle or jar with light protection.
Usage:
Apply to cleansed skin daily or as needed. The emulsion will intensively moisturize, soothe, and nourish the skin, as the hydrosol adds additional beneficial effects.
Note:
In this recipe you can choose different hydrosols depending on your skin type and desired effects:
Lavender hydrosol: soothes and balances skin pH.
Chamomile hydrosol: suitable for sensitive and irritated skin.
Rose: intensely moisturizes and refreshes the skin.
