Menthol crystals

MENTHOL CRYSTALS (Menthol) are a natural compound obtained from the essential oil of peppermint (Mentha arvensis or Mentha piperita) by distillation and cooling. The crystals are transparent-white, with a characteristic fresh mint scent. When in contact with the skin, they give a cooling sensation, as they stimulate cold receptors without actually lowering skin temperature. It acts as an analgesic and anti-inflammatory, and opens the airways. It is indispensable in products for the care of heavy and tired legs and hot soles, as it relieves tired and swollen legs. It works by stimulating receptors in the skin that respond to cold. It is added to ointments for caring for injuries and bruises, as it acts as an analgesic and relieves localised pain. It is also used in products applied for headaches and neuralgias on the temples (but not too close to the eyes!).

Properties:

• Cooling effect – sensation of freshness, reduces the feeling of heat.
• Soothing effect – relieves itching and burning sensation.
• Aromatic properties – fresh, strong scent.
• Solubility – soluble in alcohol, propanediol, and oils; limited solubility in water.

Use in cosmetics

• Cooling balms and ointments: 2–5% (therapeutically up to 10%)
• Shampoos and shower gels: 0.2–1%
• Lip balms: 0.1–0.5%
• After-sun creams and gels: 0.2–0.5%
• Refreshing foot sprays: 0.5–2%

 Warnings:

• Do not use on children under 7 years of age.
• Do not use on people with epilepsy.
• Avoid applying too close to the eyes.
• Do not use undiluted directly on the skin.
• Products containing menthol should be applied only locally and not over the entire body.
• Do not inhale when heating.
• Do not use if taking homeopathic medicines.
