Potassium hydroxide is hygroscopic and dissolves in water. Because it readily binds water, it must be stored in a tightly sealed container. A potassium hydroxide solution is strongly basic and can effectively neutralise acids.

Always have vinegar ready for neutralisation in case of an accident. When mixing it into a liquid, toxic fumes are released and high temperatures develop — cooling may sometimes even be necessary. Always add KOH to the liquid slowly. Never pour the liquid onto the base, as this can cause an explosion.
