How does borax clean?
Borax has many chemical properties that contribute to its cleaning power. Borax and other borates clean and bleach by converting some water molecules into hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in hot water.
Borax also inhibits the metabolic processes of many organisms. This property allows borax to disinfect and destroy unwanted pests.
It can be used for disinfection or also as an insecticide, fungicide, and herbicide. To inhibit mould, apply a thick paste made from borax and water to the affected area. Allow it to dry (it can be left overnight or even longer), then sweep away the powder and rinse off the residue.
It also acts as a natural bleaching agent, with greatest effectiveness at temperatures above 55°C (hydrogen peroxide is formed).
As a cleaner, it can be used to clean the toilet bowl, where it can also remove rust rings. To clean, pour a cup of borax solution into the toilet bowl in the evening, leave it overnight, and clean in the morning.
It can be used as a general-purpose cleaner by preparing a solution of 2 teaspoons of borax and 2 cups of very hot water in a spray bottle. Before use, shake well to dissolve the borax.
Always wash your hands after use, as it irritates the skin. Boric acid is released.
Borax is completely natural, but that does not automatically mean it is safer for you or the environment than synthetic chemicals. Although plants need and contain boron, for example, too much of it will destroy them. This is why borax is also used as a herbicide, and it is equally effective at killing cockroaches, ants, and fleas. Therefore, borax should not be used near food, and must also be kept out of reach of children and animals. After use, make sure to rinse borax from clothing and all surfaces that have come into contact with it.
On the other hand, borax is found in almost all higher-quality varieties of Russian and Iranian caviar sold in Europe. Only the quantity of borax is limited, namely 4g per kilogram of roe. It is also found in some vitamin dietary supplements. In food, it is found as an additive and preservative under the designation E285.
