Vitamin A - retinyl palmitate
Retinoids are a group of compounds that includes vitamin A or retinol, its natural metabolites, and (semi-)synthetic derivatives. Natural retinoids include retinol, retinal, retinoic acid, and retinol esters, which include retinyl palmitate. In terms of active potency, the order is: retinoic acid > retinal > retinol > retinyl esters; however, this sequence also applies to their irritancy (which is greatest with retinoic acid, which is why it is on the EU list of substances prohibited in cosmetic products and may only be used under dermatological supervision). Retinol is extremely unstable (sensitive to light and oxidation) and therefore requires special procedures during manufacturing and packaging, which is why retinyl palmitate is most commonly used in home cosmetics.
Retinyl palmitate is used in products as an active ingredient. Topical application increases the thickness of the epidermis and collagen formation, while also influencing moisture retention in the skin. It also helps normalise skin keratinisation and reduces the effects of photoageing. It also has a beneficial effect on acne-prone skin, as it accelerates the healing and regeneration process of the skin.
It is used in products for reducing facial wrinkles, improving skin elasticity, and maintaining a youthful appearance (anti-ageing cosmetics). It is particularly suitable for mature and dry skin.
We add it to: creams, lotions, serums, anti-ageing cosmetics.
Solubility: oil phase
Use: up to 0.3% (body lotion up to 0.05%)
Vitamin A is packaged in bottles like those used for essential oils. It is an oily liquid of yellowish-brown colour, which can be completely solid when cold and needs to be melted.
Melting point is between 28–29℃
