Liquid silk (silk proteins)

Amino acids are used in a variety of cosmetic and personal care products, including hair care products, particularly hair conditioners, hair sprays, skin care products, creams, bath products and numerous other body care products.

The acids are derived from silkworm cocoons, either by boiling the cocoons or by piercing them with a needle. During boiling, the silk that makes up the cocoon unravels, making the silk threads and silk amino acids available. Silk proteins are frequently used in hair care products because they have the ability to penetrate the hair shaft and strengthen damaged hair. The amino acids bond with the keratin in the hair, creating a protective layer that helps seal in moisture while adding shine. An increasing number of commercial hair sprays use silk amino acids to provide additional protection and shine without weighing the hair down.

Liquid silk contains silk amino acids that also give the skin a very soft and velvety feel. At the same time, it also has excellent water-binding properties. Silk amino acids (silk proteins) also possess a certain amount of antioxidant benefits.

Silk amino acids have a lower molecular weight than silk protein powders and can therefore penetrate both the skin and the hair. They are recommended for formulating shampoos, conditioners, hair masks, shower gels, body lotions, cleansers, facial toners and moisturisers, even mascaras, lipsticks and other decorative cosmetics.
