DHA (Dihydroxyacetone) - self-tanning agent
DHA is a molecule that acts as a self-tanning agent by binding to amino acids in keratin and giving the skin a color that can range from yellow to brown.
DHA is the main ingredient in products called sunless tanning or more commonly self-tanners.
It is important to note that the pigmentation obtained is not a true tan, as melanin is not involved in the process!
Uses: DHA is used to create self-tanning gels, creams, lotions and serums.
Recommended usage percentage: up to 5% of the formulation.
DHA is water-soluble and must not be heated above 40°C.
DHA is a safe substance, but at the same time a very unstable molecule, as it is highly reactive. It is very hygroscopic and stable up to pH 7 (optimally at pH 4-6); at higher pH, DHA tends to degrade.
Avoid storing DHA at temperatures above 40 °C, as this temperature causes rapid degradation (more than 40% of DHA in three months). In the manufacturing process, DHA must be added to the emulsion while cooling (below 40°C), and the final product must be packaged in opaque and hermetically sealed packaging.
Xanthan gum is recommended for thickening the product.
Store in a cool, dry place away from light and heat sources and especially away from moisture. It is advisable to store the product in the refrigerator, preferably at temperatures between 2° and 8°.
INCI: Dihidroksiaceton.
Preservatives: none.
