Concentration: 200:1

This means the aloe powder is 200 times more concentrated than the fresh plant. So, to reconstitute the aloe and make a 1:1 solution suitable for an organic formula, you would add 0.5 g of our aloe powder to 99.5 g of purified water.

Aloe vera powder is produced by a freeze-drying process (lyophilisation — drying by freezing, which removes water from organic substances that would otherwise be damaged by heat). The powder consists of 100% natural juice from Aloe barbadensis.

Aloe vera powder is a water-soluble fine white powder and is highly hygroscopic (it binds moisture), so store it in a dry place at up to 25 degrees Celsius.

Aloe vera protects the skin (and wounds) from external irritants, inhibits bacterial growth, and at the same time cools the skin. Aloe gel contains 96 to 99 percent water, a significant amount of mucilage, followed by salicylic acid, which acts as an analgesic, anti-inflammatory and keratolytic agent (softens the outer layer of skin), vitamins A, E, C and D, some free sugars, free amino acids, proteins, fats and plant sterols; it is also rich in calcium, sodium and potassium as well as manganese, iron, selenium, zinc and magnesium.

Aloe is also an excellent moisturising agent, and a quick look at the structure and chemistry of aloe shows why. Polysaccharides or sugars predominate, and these sugars are hygroscopic (they love water), and combined with the fact that these sugars form a strong network structure, they are simultaneously substantive and moisturising to the skin.

Aloe contains important enzymes that break down bradykinin, a tissue hormone that causes inflammation, and tyrosine, from which the skin pigment melanin is produced in the skin, causing the formation of brown spots on the skin of the face and hands in older people.

Usage: aloe vera is a very popular ingredient in modern products, including soaps, cosmetics, shampoos, hair conditioners, sunscreen lotions, as well as creams and ointments with active ingredients. Typically added at 0.1 – 1% in a formula.

Formulation tips: Be aware that aloe contains a high percentage of mineral salts, which means it can weaken your emulsion system if you are preparing a cream or lotion. When using aloe, check your stability to avoid product failure. Aloe powder is heat stable and can be added at any time during production. It can also tolerate a wide pH range, but performs best between 4.5-8.

Action: On the skin it acts as a humectant, stimulates the synthesis of collagen and elastin and accelerates healing. It soothes irritated and sunburned skin and provides a cooling sensation. Reduces itching and inflammation.

Usage: Our powder is a 200x concentrate, which can be prepared with distilled water in a 1:199 ratio (powder:water). For longer shelf life, add the preservative cosgard (0.5-0.7%), and for making a gel also add the thickener xanthan gum (0.3-0.5%, depending on the desired consistency).
