Silicon dioxide or silica is a very common earth mineral.

In products it is used for mattifying; it gives the skin a velvety feel, reduces the appearance of wrinkles and skin imperfections. It reduces the richness of oilier creams as it absorbs excess oil. It is used in mineral makeup, products for oily skin, and all those where a matte effect is desired.

Added to: creams, lotions, ointments, balms, powders, decorative cosmetics.

Solubility: not soluble in either the oil or water phase.

Usage: 1-20% (creams, lotions, balms: up to 8%, powders: up to 20%)
