Magnesium sulfate (bitter salt, Epsom salt)
Magnesium sulfate (also known as Epsom salt or bitter salt) consists of small white or colorless crystals, usually needle-shaped, with a cool, salty-bitter taste. It is freely soluble in water and partially soluble in alcohol. Its chemical formula is MgSO4. It is used in medicine as a detoxifier, laxative, against cramps, and for those with magnesium deficiency in the body. It is also used as a dietary supplement for animals. It is also a common aid for plants in gardening. The best-known product containing magnesium sulfate in Slovenia is Donat Mg.
Epsom salt is excellent as a bath salt, or it can be used to make a wonderful oil-salt scrub for removing dead skin cells. It is well known that sulfate reduces swelling and removes toxins from the body and skin. It is also a wonderful addition to homemade bath bombs.
Scrub recipe:
- one cup (230 ml) of Epsom salt
- one third of a cup (80 ml) of your chosen oil (almond, grape seed oil, etc.)
- 10-20 drops of your chosen essential oil
Mix everything together thoroughly so the oil is evenly distributed and store in a container. The mixture is sufficient for a 200 ml jar.
How to use: first shower and wash, then take a small amount of the scrub salt and rub it into the damp skin using circular motions. Once you have treated the body or just the selected skin areas, rinse off with warm water. Pat dry rather than rubbing vigorously, as vigorous rubbing would also remove the beneficial oil and essential oil from the skin.
WARNING: THE SALT / SULFATE IS INTENDED FOR COSMETIC APPLICATIONS AND IS NOT SUITABLE FOR CONSUMPTION!
