Himalayan salt
Himalayan salt contains 84 elements that are important for your health. It is rich in electrolytes (potassium, calcium, magnesium, sodium, chloride, bicarbonates). The typical pink colour of the salt is given by iron. The salt is used for rehydration, mineralisation, detoxification, and alkalisation of the body.
Himalayan salt is mined in a mine on the foothills of the Himalayan mountain range, more specifically in the Khewra salt mines in Pakistan.
Dissolving the salt
Himalayan salt is activated only in the form of a saturated solution. It is prepared from rock salt, but you can also use more or less coarsely ground Himalayan salt, available in specialised shops and well-stocked department stores. Place a few large crystals or crushed salt into a glass jar with a well-sealing lid and add enough water (preferably spring water) so that some salt remains undissolved (3 to 4 dl of water is sufficient for 150 g of salt). If the crystals are very large, wait approximately one hour for the brine to reach its maximum concentration (26%). Then add water or salt as needed to maintain the saturated solution. Everything derives from this solution, which can be further diluted or used at its base concentration. The solution can be used in cooking and massage, for baths, nasal rinsing, oral hygiene…
Salt bath…
… gently removes toxins and acids from the body. Add 1 kg of salt to approximately 100 l of water. The bath should last 20 minutes, and the water temperature should be 37 °C.
For skin cleansing and care
For skin cleansing, prepare a 10 to 12 percent solution; if you have small wounds on the skin, the solution should not exceed 1 percent. Always prepare low-concentration salt solutions fresh. Many people also use a saturated or diluted Himalayan salt solution for skin care. Salt cleanses and rejuvenates the skin and increases its elasticity.
For nasal and throat rinsing
For sinus problems, colds, throat and tonsil inflammation, bad breath, and bleeding gums, the use of a 1 percent solution is recommended.
For oral hygiene
For rinsing the mouth and tooth hygiene, use the undiluted 26 percent solution (the same as for food preparation).
Massage
You need 1 dl of olive oil mixed with ½ dl of water and ½ dl of saturated Himalayan salt solution. Shake the mixture until it becomes uniform and smooth, then use it for gentle massage.
The fifth element
Some call salt the fifth element, alongside water, earth, air, and fire, as its properties are said to be comparable to ether, the true fifth element. Why does the ocean, from which salt originates, attract us so strongly? Because our subconscious is said to want to return to a special state that restores our energy. With industrialisation, we have increasingly distanced ourselves from nature, and with it we have lost touch.
