Description:
Dimethicone is a linear polydimethylsiloxane used as a softener, smoothing agent, and skin protectant.

Use in cosmetics:
Skin care:
Used to reduce transepidermal water loss (TEWL) by forming a protective layer on the skin.
Acts as an emollient that softens and smooths the skin.
Hair care:
Eases detangling and improves shine and smoothness.
Decorative cosmetics:
Improves the texture of products such as foundations, concealers, and lipsticks.
Anti-friction formulations:
Ideal for products that reduce friction, e.g. anti-chafing creams.

Water resistance:
Frequently used in sunscreens or waterproof make-up products.
Application process in cosmetic products:

Solubility:
Dimethicone is insoluble in water but compatible with most oils and lipids.
It is used in the oil phase of formulations.

Addition:
Added in the cold phase or after heating in heat-processed formulations.
In emulsions, Dimethicone is added to the oil phase before combining with the water phase.

Dosage:
Typically at concentrations of 0.5–5 % (depending on product type).

Steps for incorporation into a formulation:
In the oil phase:
Dimethicone is mixed with other lipophilic ingredients.
During emulsification:
Heat to approximately 60–70 °C (if necessary) to allow uniform mixing.
Homogenisation:
For better dispersion, use a homogeniser or mixer.

Use in specific products:
Creams and lotions: Dimethicone is used to improve spreadability and softness.
BB creams, foundations: Adds a silky feel and increases water resistance.
Lip balms: Helps create a smooth application without a sticky feeling.
Hair sprays: Increases shine and reduces static.
